History is the study of past events, particularly in human affairs. It is connected with someone or something. Furthermore, it can prevent to keep us from making the same mistakes.
In the 6th century AD, the bishop of Tours began his history of the world with a simple observation that “A great many things keep happening, some of them good, some of them bad”. For a phrase that captures the whole of history it’s among the best, but in writing about the past we are rarely so economical. From ancient epics – Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War - to medieval hagiographies and modern deconstructions, historians have endlessly chronicled, surveyed and analysed the great many things that keep happening, declaring some of them good and some of them bad. But the writing of history always illuminates two periods – the one history is written about and the one it is written in. And to look at how the writing of history has changed is to examine the way successive ages have understood their world. In short, there is a history to history.
What is art?
Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
Art plays a large part in making our lives infinitely rich. Art stimulates different parts of our brains to make us laugh or incite us to riot, with a whole gamut of emotions in between. Art gives us a way to be creative and express ourselves. Art is something that makes us more thoughtful and well-rounded humans.
What is design?
Design could be viewed as an activity that translates an idea into a blueprint for something useful, whether it's a car, a building, a graphic, a service or a process. The important part is the translation of the idea, though design's ability to spark the idea in the first place shouldn't be overlooked.
Scientists can invent technologies, manufacturers can make products, engineers can make them function and marketers can sell them, but only designers can combine insight into all these things and turn a concept into something that's desirable, viable, commercially successful and adds value to people's lives.
What do you want from this course?
I want to improve my design skills and hands on in every design medium as well.
What do you want to be doing in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?
I would like to gain experience in design industry in 5 years to improve my design skills first. I hope that I can join any big design company to reveal my design skills which I learnt before in 10 years. In 20 years, I hope to own a design company and keep improving my knowledge by travelling over the world.
What do you hope to get from this particular class?
I hope I can earn some knowledge from my lecturer and my course mates. I want to learn more about the history and culture of past human arts. It is because I think that it can let me understand more about our visual environment. Moreover, I think I can learn more on how to interpret our own culture, as well as other cultures and value systems of both the past and the present.
Is history of art and design necessary do you think for your larger goals?
Of course! Because it is a part of design to let me become a professional designer in my future.
